Watch for these warning signs: water temperature that swings between hot and cold, rumbling or popping noises from the tank, rusty water from the hot tap, puddles around the base, or a unit that takes noticeably longer to heat. Most tank water heaters last 8 to 12 years. If yours is past the 10-year mark and showing any of these symptoms, a replacement is usually more cost-effective than another repair.
Testing identifies bacteria, nitrates, heavy metals, and mineral levels that you cannot see, smell, or taste. The Wisconsin DNR recommends testing private well water at least once per year. Homes on wells in Dane County commonly deal with hard water, elevated iron, and seasonal bacteria spikes after heavy rainfall. Without testing, these contaminants can damage pipes and appliances, and some pose direct health risks, especially for young children and older adults.
Almost certainly, yes. Dane County well water typically tests between 15 and 25 grains per gallon of hardness. Anything above 7 gpg is considered hard. That mineral buildup crusts shower heads, streaks dishes, shortens the life of water heaters and dishwashers, and dries out skin and hair. A properly sized water softener matched to your actual water test results fixes all of it. We test your water first and recommend a system based on what the results show, not a one-size-fits-all guess.
The most common warning signs are low or fluctuating water pressure, sputtering faucets when you first turn them on, and the pump cycling on and off more than usual. You might also hear banging, clunking, or grinding from the pressure tank area. A sudden spike in your electric bill can point to a pump motor struggling to keep up. Most submersible well pumps last about 15 years, so knowing the age of yours matters.
At minimum, once a year. Twice a year is better if your system is more than 10 years old. You should also schedule an inspection after any severe storm, flooding, or extended drought. All three can affect water quality and well pump performance. A proper inspection covers the wellhead cap and seal, pressure tank, electrical components, and a water quality test. As members of both the WWWA and NGWA, we follow current industry standards for every inspection.
It depends on the well depth, pump type, and what else needs replacing at the same time. A shallow well jet pump replacement is less involved than pulling and replacing a submersible pump from 200 feet down. Constant pressure pumps cost more upfront but deliver steadier water flow with less wear on the system. We provide a free written estimate before any work starts, so you know the full cost before we touch anything.
Hard water is a reality throughout Dane County and the surrounding area. That’s true for both municipal water supplies and water from private wells. The mineral-rich water is not good for pipes, appliances or in many cases, people. Adding an appropriate water treatment system to your home improves water quality.
Drinking water tastes better, soap rinses off and dishes come clean. Treated water is safer for people, pets and plumbing. Hard water streaks dishes and crusts shower heads. In addition it builds within pipes, dishwashers and fixtures.
There’s no “one size fits all” water treatment solution. Not even a “one size fits most.” Take the first step and call in one of our skilled technicians to complete an accurate water test. Based on the results we’ll create a system exactly for your needs. The solution for your home may be one of these – or a combination:
Impurities in drinking water are a constant threat. That’s especially true if you draw water from a private well. But having “city water” doesn’t guarantee it’s without contaminants. People, pets and expensive appliances are at risk without regular water tests and treatment. If you have municipal water, testing and treatment for most things takes place before the water reaches your home. If you have a private well the responsibility is all yours.
Our Specialists are available to help, no matter the time of day. If you’re in need of emergency services, we’ve got you covered 24/7.
